LAND ROVER FREELANDER KALAHARI CONCEPT
Land Rover's Freelander makes its Ill. debut at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. A small, premium sport-utility vehicle, Freelander appears in concept vehicle form as the Freelander Kalahari concept. The production version of Land Rover's Freelander model will go on sale in North America during the fourth quarter of this year. Freelander, the smallest Land Rover yet, will also be the most prestigious and capable small sport-utility vehicle ever built.
Freelander will be sold in the U.S. as a five-door model equipped with a V6 engine; all-wheel drive; a five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission; and a four-channel, all-terrain Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard equipment.
Freelander will also feature standard four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) and standard Hill Descent Control (HDC). Seventy percent (70%) percent new when compared with the original Land Rover Freelander that debuted in Europe in 1997, the North American-specification Freelander will feature extensive chassis improvements and an all-new 2.4-liter, 24-valve V6 engine that delivers 175 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. Both cloth and leather interior trim packages will be offered and MSRPs for Freelander are expected to start below $30,000.
Land Rover's Freelander Kalahari concept was developed by Solihull, England-based Land Rover Special Vehicles to highlight the extreme off-road aspects of Freelander's personality. Kalahari features Molten Orange and matte Black exterior paint colors; a distinctive black leather/fabric interior with Molten Orange stitching; 17-inch Freedom-style wheels; and Land Rover Special Vehicles-designed vehicle accessories including an A-frame nudge bar; heavy duty underbody protection plates; 10 accessory lights; and a heavy-duty roof rack with cover.
